Cultivating Community: U of G's Greenhouse Initiative for Food Security

This project sees students working in the Bovey Greenhouse on campus to grow fresh produce for the Guelph Student Food Bank. The students care for the beds to cultivate tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, peppers, microgreens etc and deliver it to the food bank. Charlene Winchcombe-Forhan, MA '91 educational support coordinator from the College of Biological Sciences, came up with the idea for the project and got the ball rolling. It now includes students from across the University in partnerships with Physical Resources and the Sustainability Office.

The University of Guelph is grateful to the PepsiCo Foundation who generously supports this project along with four other food related initiatives on campus including:

• The Campus Food Market - three weekly on-campus food market offering fresh fruit and vegetables at affordable prices
• Culinary Wellness - student workshops on making quick, affordable meals using healthy ingredients)
• The Grocery Bus - a bus service for students that enables access to stores and markets that serve a wider range
• Grocery Shopping 101- a two-part program for off-campus and international students that teaches budgeting and planning for meals along with tips to shopping effectively.
