Alumni Week Q&A

What is your fondest memory from OVC?

Our class had fun together, the old adage "work hard, play hard" definitely applied to us. I remember the times spent building life-long friendships over pints at the Grad Lounge, on conference trips, during final year play rehearsals, and on our grad trip before heading off to the real world.

Are you or your class doing anything special to celebrate your milestone year?

Our OVC Class, the 2001 Otters, held both 5 year and 10 year reunions. I'm sure many of us were looking forward to getting together for this milestone of 20 years since graduation. Sadly, COVID-19 restrictions will push this get-together into the future.

Was there something a faculty or staff member did to inspire you, or something they said that you still remember? Tell us about it.

This is not an easy question to answer. There isn't one specific event or statement that stands out, I reflect more on the understanding I gained as a student from many of our professors that we are all partners in this profession.

What is your favourite part of U of G Campus?

The original OVC main building.

What is one piece of advice you want to give to current and future student veterinarians?

This seems even more applicable now. Don't allow yourself to become isolated. This can be an interesting and rewarding profession but at times, it can also be difficult and quite stressful no matter what branch of veterinary medicine you pursue. Keep in touch with your classmates, reach out to your professors and teachers, work together with nearby veterinarians and build your own village of supportive colleagues. To quote C.S. Lewis, "Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one."
