Alumni Week Q&A

What is your fondest memory from U of G?

How I was welcomed, accepted and valued by people I respected. I spoke to more professors in one day than I did in my 4 years at the University of Toronto. My memory is that of a family. This is where I met my wife Joanne, married now for 42 glorious years.

What values did U of G instill in you that you carry to this day?

I ended up having a successful scientific career because of my U of G experience and life lessons instilled in me by my wonderful and gifted supervisor Dr. Peter Dobos. He introduced me to an insect virus and taught me how to study its molecular biology. What we learned was the beginning of a technology that is used today for the NovoVax COVID vaccine among others.

What is one piece of advice you want to give to current and future U of G students?

Work hard, play hard, respect all. Where you go when done is entirely up to you.

What does CBS 50th anniversary/Alumni Week mean to you?

It means I am old and reminds me of how fast time can pass, and the many memories I cherish.
