Richard graduated from the University of Guelph with a BA Honours in Criminal Justice and Public Policy with a minor in Political Science. He also completed the certificate program in Leadership from the College of Management and Economics. Richard was involved in a number of extra-curricular activities throughout his years at Guelph. He volunteered his time with the College of Social and Applied Human Science Student Alliance, with the Centre for Students with Disabilities and with the Department of Athletics. Richard was one of the original Athletic Peer Helpers with the Student Athlete Mentorship (SAM) Program and was a five-year varsity athlete with the men's baseball team, including his last two years as team captain. Richard has continued his involvement with the baseball program and currently serves as team statistician.

In addition to his extra-curricular activities, Richard held an Undergraduate Research Assistantship (URA) position for two years with the University Secretariat, working on behalf of the University's Board of Governors, Board of Trustees and Senate. Richard is currently the Manager of Policy and Issues for the Beef Farmers of Ontario, a non-profit grassroots organization that lobbies government on behalf of the Province's 19,000 beef farmers. Richard resides in Guelph with his wife (and fellow Guelph Alumna) Kristen.
