Student Affairs

The University of Guelph is Canada’s Track and Field University.  Over the past 20 years, the school has captured 35 Canadian University titles and produced more than a dozen Olympians. This fundraising project is focused on high performance and the pursuit of excellence in the sport of track and field. It will support recruitment, student athlete scholarships, coaching and research in high performance sport.

Impact

The vision for this project is to build on the incredible legacy of the Gryphon Track and Field program and to cement the University of Guelph as the leader in track and field in Canada.  At the 2012 Olympics, six Gryphon athletes and alumni competed in the Olympic Games.  At the 2016 Olympics, there were thirteen Gryphon athletes and alumni. These numbers are exceptional and represent the largest representation from any athletics program in the country.  The goal of Podium24 is to build on this legacy and continue to propel the University of Guelph to be Canada’s hub for athletics excellence.

Goals

The Department of Athletics is planning to raise $700,000 to support Podium24, a project to help cultivate the next group of world-class track and field athletes here at the University of Guelph. The project is designed to attract, develop and retain athletes that will be representing Canada at international games, culminating in the 2024 Olympic Games, hence the project’s name, ‘Podium24’.

Individual Goals:

The funds raised will be allocated annually over the next 5 years:

  • $50,000 for athlete scholarships to recruit and retain the best track and field athletes in Canada.
  • $50,000 for enhanced athlete support, including increased support for travel to international competitions, support for high performance training camps, greater support for paramedical staff and for appropriate clinical testing as needed.
  • $20,000 for support for a graduate, assistant coach or supplying and enhanced honorarium for part-time coaching assistance to augment that already provided by full time staff.
  • $20,000 for enhanced research funding in collaboration with the College of Biological Sciences to maintain innovative research in the area of Human Performance.
