Linda Adams Celebrated for Exemplary Volunteer Leadership

Linda Adams

The University of Guelph is proud to announce Linda Adams (B.A.Sc. ’83, M.A. ’19) as the recipient of the 2026 Alumni Volunteer Award.

A retired high school teacher and guidance counselor, Linda has followed in her parents’ footsteps, making community-building a lifelong calling. Her volunteerism took root in the 1980s at the University of Guelph, where she served as a student representative for the Food Service Ombudsman, a Residence Hall Councillor and a Residence House Advisor. Throughout her career — and while raising three children — she remained deeply committed to supporting youth, women’s initiatives, and community health and education.

Linda met her husband, Rob Adams, on her first day as a University of Guelph student. That chance encounter blossomed into a lifelong partnership — in marriage and in business — and, following the passing of their parents, a shared commitment to give back in their honour. Together, they chose the University of Guelph as the primary focus of their time and talent.

In retirement, Linda has continued to make a remarkable impact through her service to the University. She served on the 2021 President’s Strategic Refresh Committee, is an advisory board member for the Agricultural Technology and Design Club, and gives her time across the College of Engineering and the Lang School of Business as a volunteer judge, sponsor, speaker and dedicated student advocate.

She is especially recognized for envisioning and leading the “Poppies of Remembrance, Community & Unity” initiative. Her inspiration came when Chancellor Mary Ann Chambers introduced her to Dr. John Walsh and Lt. Darren Sargent, founders of the University’s Serving Scholar program — a meeting that kindled a shared vision of remembrance and common purpose. This extraordinary project brought together communities from across Canada to contribute more than 4,000 handcrafted poppies, now displayed annually at War Memorial Hall and across campus as a powerful symbol of remembrance, gratitude and unity.
As the daughter of two WWII veterans and the mother of a son and son-in-law who served as student-soldiers, Linda’s work reflects a deeply personal commitment to honouring service and sacrifice. She accepts this award on behalf of the many individuals whose collective efforts brought "Poppies of Remembrance” to life.

Linda’s leadership, generosity and unwavering dedication to community make her a truly deserving recipient of the 2026 Alumni Volunteer Award.
