Chemistry Highest Priority

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Guelph has been a long-time leader within Canada, and our alumni are an important part of our history. Our graduates hold positions of responsibility and influence across the many fields that rely on a solid understanding of chemical principles. As we complete our $25M renovation of the MacNaughton research laboratories, we want to renew our undergraduate facilities to prepare for the next 50-year adventure in Chemistry.

As enrollment continues to increase, we face many challenges to continue to provide an extraordinary experience for our students. To ensure that our students have the skills that they need, we are focusing on building a strategic plan and raising funds for the Chemistry Highest Priority. The purpose of this fund is to support student success by reducing financial barriers, providing opportunities to attend conferences, and to learn beyond a traditional classroom. Our alumni have fond and vivid memories of their laboratory experiences at Guelph, and we always strive to enhance and extend this component of our students’ development.

The Chemistry Highest Priority Fund allows us to enhance our learning spaces with state-of-the-art equipment and technology upgrades. Our priority is focused on innovative student space. Thanks to the funds from the Chemistry Highest Priority Fund we have been able to renovate our first-year labs. This year, we are focused on electronic upgrades to allow our students to focus on more sophisticated experiments that demonstrate fundamental chemical principles. Our electronic upgrades would impact over 2,250 each semester!

Further, our goal is to upgrade the control instrumentation for our 300 MHz NMR system, which is vital for many of the advanced synthetic and spectroscopic experiments of the upper year laboratories. Upgrades such as this will set the tone for our first-year students to have a valuable learning experience throughout their time here at Guelph and will provide them with skills to excel in their future.

Thank you for being part of our journey — you are a testament to the growth, maturity and depth of chemical education that we have nurtured over the years. You are an important part of our community and you can have an incredible impact on our students' lives. I hope you will consider a gift of any size to support and develop future chemistry leaders.

Your support is vital to our success and I hope you will consider a gift to the Chemistry Highest Priority this year.
