Math and Stats Highest Priority

As our society becomes more technologically advanced, it becomes more and more important to have workers with skills in Mathematics and Statistics. The department of Mathematics and Statistics is proud of its role in helping our students develop these skills. Graduates of our programs have found employment in a diverse and exciting array of fields from Silicon Valley to Bay Street to the European Space Agency to name just a few.

To ensure that our students have the skills that they need, we have created a new Mathematical Sciences Major which combines a strong background in Mathematics and/or Statistics with course in an area of emphasis such as Computer Science, Economics, Physics or Biology where Mathematics and Statistics can be applied.

We have sought to improve the student experience for our majors. As a recent example, campus-wide there has been a lack of space for undergraduate students to work. We can still see students sitting between bookstacks in the Library or in the hallways. Our department has recently created two new spaces for our undergraduate Mathematical Science Majors. The first is the Conversation Corner which is an open area in the center of the fifth floor of MacNaughton with blackboards where students can collaborate and study. The second is a dedicated Undergraduate Student Lounge for Mathematical Science Majors. Both the Conversation Corner and the Undergraduate Lounge were made possible by a generous donation by emeritus professor Jack Weiner as well as support from alumni donors.

As enrollment increases, and more students decide to dedicate themselves to the field of mathematics and statistics, we find ourselves in need of a renovation to continue to support our growing student population. With your help, we can focus on an expansion to allow for undergraduate lounge space, seminar rooms and opportunities for collaboration for our students.

With your support of the Mathematics and Statistics Highest Priority we can support growth opportunities for our students to learn and collaborate.
