MEET OUR SPEAKERS

Dr. Ryan Appleby
Ryan Appleby is a boarded radiologist and faculty member at the Ontario Veterinary College.  His research focuses on the use of artificial intelligence in veterinary imaging, with numerous collaborative projects focused on improving radiographic quality and identifying radiomic signatures for diseases. He is the current chair of the ACVR/ECVDI AI Education and Development Committee.  Ryan is passionate about education and technology and is the co-founder of Obi Veterinary Education, a website dedicated to delivering veterinary education in short, manageable segments (www.obivet.com).

Dr. Sara Ritzie
Sara’s journey in veterinary medicine began in a traditional small animal practice, where she discovered her passion for working with animals along with a natural inclination for embracing new challenges. Motivated to expand her knowledge and skill set beyond conventional boundaries, she joined Royal Canin and delved into the field of veterinary nutrition, honing functional and technical expertise in promoting health through nutrition and developing a talent for simplifying complex concepts into effective, accessible strategies.Throughout her career, Dr. Ritzie has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to volunteer work, with a strong affinity for improving access to care, and supporting underserved communities across Ontario and abroad. In 2023, she embarked on her DVSc Residency in Community Medicine, where her goal is to inspire positive change in the field of veterinary medicine, promoting the well-being of animals, communities, and veterinary teams while emphasizing the importance of accessible care. She is involved in outreach, research, and teaching through the Community Healthcare Partnership Program.

Dr. Chris Riley
Chris is a veterinarian and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. A military, veterinary, and business graduate of the University of Melbourne, Australia, he completed graduate training (MSc, PhD) at the University of Saskatchewan. He has served as a volunteer firefighter and first responder in in Australia and New Zealand. Before returning to Canada at the end of 2022, he was Manager of the Veterinary Emergency Response Team at Massey University, New Zealand. He was an inaugural board member of Animal Emergency Incident Management ANZ, Australia, and Deputy Chair of the National Animal Welfare Emergency Management Committee of the New Zealand Government. An academic practicing veterinarian with a smattering of private practice in Australia and Canada and an international researcher and speaker, he is an author of book chapters and more than 120 articles on veterinary medicine and surgery, large animal welfare, and aspects of animal rescue and disaster responses. In addition to his leadership role at the Ontario Veterinary College, Chris works with the Equine Guelph team to provide large animal emergency incident response training.

Dr. Maureen Anderson
Maureen Anderson is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College and is ACVIM board-certified in large animal internal medicine.  Her graduate and post-graduate work had a strong focus on infectious disease control and zoonotic diseases in particular. She is currently Lead Veterinarian - Animal Health and Welfare at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, where she continues to work in areas bridging animal and public health, including rabies and antimicrobial stewardship, and co-leads the companion animal Ontario Animal Health Network (OAHN).
