Cyndy McLean
MSc '97

Since graduating with a Master of Science in Exercise, Nutrition and Metabolism from the University of Guelph in 1997, Cyndy McLean has remained committed to the field of health and nutrition, both on and off-campus.

After completing her degree, Cyndy became a leader in the development of the on campus Health and Performance Centre; a sports medicine and health promotion facility that services both the U of G and the greater community, allowing health and nutrition science students to gain invaluable practical experience. Cyndy led a collaboration of multiple departments on campus to create this state-of-the-art clinic and education centre and has served as its Director since its opening in 1998.

In her role at the Health and Performance Centre, Cyndy coordinates a student volunteer program in which dozens of university students participate each year. The program allows volunteers to provide help for the existing patient base at the HPC in order to gain experience in health care and research.

Within the community, Cyndy dedicates her time to the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion Foundation, where she has been the chairperson and team leader for the Guelph Wheels in Motion event for the last three years. In 2005, because of her commitment to helping others with spinal cord injuries, she was selected to be an ambassador for the Rick Hansen Foundation. Furthermore, she volunteers her time to help others in the community who are disabled, by getting involved in committees that address accessibility issues in the workplace, university and the community.

In addition to her volunteer efforts, Cyndy is a positive role model for both athletes with disabilities and women in sports.  She is a member of the provincial wheelchair tennis team and has, remarkably, achieved elite status after only three years of competitive play.  Recently, she was invited to the national team training camp.  Cyndy’s dedication to the community and leadership skills also earned her the 2006 YMCA/YWCA Woman of Distinction Award for voluntary community service.

The University of Guelph Alumni Association is proud to honour the accomplishments of Cyndy McLean with the 2007 Alumni Medal of Achievement.
