2010 Dr. Karen Dupont DVM '98

Karen Dupont, DVM ’98, began practicing at the Owen Sound Veterinary Clinic in 2003, and remains an active volunteer at the University of Guelph and within her community. She is a member of the Grey Bruce Veterinary Association (GBVA) and works with her peers  to promote local veterinary issues.  

Five years ago, Dr. Dupont helped create the GBVA Cat Lake First Nations Project, where she offered veterinary assistance to the Northern Ontario First Nations community of Cat Lake.  She recruited colleagues who joined her for a week of surgeries, vaccinations, parasite control and school presentations on pet care and animal welfare.

Internationally, Dr. Dupont is actively involved in the Rural Area Veterinary Service. Along with other OVC alumni, she travels to remote areas to do surgeries and mentor students as they deal with population and disease control. In 2010, she spent a week at an Apache reserve in Arizona and is scheduled for another volunteer stint in Nevada in 2011

Dupont contributes to OVC as an active volunteer in the undergraduate DVM program’s Art of Veterinary Medicine communication labs. As a coach practitioner Dr. Dupont facilitates the learning for a group of veterinary students with a focus on the development of their interpersonal communication skills.

In an already busy schedule, Dr. Dupont finds time to volunteer as a tutor with the Adult Learning Centre in Owen Sound.

The University of Guelph Alumni Association named Karen Dupont as the recipient of the 2010 Alumni Medal of Achievement Award.
