After completing his PhD from the University of Guelph in 1995, Dr. Bhatia became a Post-doctoral Fellow at the National Cancer Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He went on to join the Robarts Research Institute in London, Ontario, as a Scientist and Assistant Professor at the University of Western Ontario.

In 2000 Dr. Bhatia was awarded the Premier’s Research Excellence Award and held a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. In 2002 he was selected from more than 1,200 nominationsfor

the prestigious Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 awards, and in 2003, he became the Krembil Foundation Research Chair in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Robarts.

Despite offers from prestigious U.S. institutions, Dr. Bhatia decided to stay in Canada and in 2006 received the Canada Research Chair in Stem Cell and Cancer Biology at McMaster University. Dr. Bhatia is now the Scientific Director of the Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute at McMaster University. He has become a world leader in stem cell research, making several important advancements. Dr. Bhatia holds many awards,

honours and fellowships and is a faculty member at both McMaster University and the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Bhatia has been a role model for young people in Canada. Throughout his undergraduate and graduate career he has maintained community involvement through volunteering as well as a strong commitment to his family. He often speaks to high school classes and service clubs and has offered his help “any time” to the University of Guelph.

The University of Guelph Alumni Association is proud to honor the accomplishments of Dr. Mick Bhatia with the 2008 Alumni Medal of Achievement.
