Jeffrey C. Lozon
BA '76

After completing his Bachelor of Arts at Guelph in 1976, Mr. Lozon earned his Masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Alberta. He has held executive positions at some of Canada’s most well-known health care institutions and agencies, including the Manitoba Health Organizations Inc. and Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, Canada’s largest specialty rehabilitation referral centre.

In 1992, Mr. Lozon was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Michael’s Hospital, a major health care and research centre affiliated with the University of Toronto. He joined St. Michael’s Hospital in 1991 as Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Lozon has led St. Michael’s Hospital through a major financial and strategic turnaround, which includes positioning the hospital as a model of fiscal responsibility, management and patient care.

In March 1999, Mr. Lozon served on secondment for one year as Deputy Minister of Health and Long-Term Care for the Province of Ontario. He was responsible for leading the health system through a period of unprecedented reform. Mr. Lozon began the process of building a new accord among health care providers in Ontario. His responsibilities included overseeing and managing the full expanse of health activities in the province including hospitals and long-term care centres, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan, Community Care Access Centres, public health and emergency health services.

In March 2000, Mr. Lozon returned to St. Michael’s Hospital as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Lozon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Administration at the University of Toronto and has previously held faculty positions at the University of Alberta and the University of Saskatchewan. Today, Mr. Lozon is a board member at the University of Guelph. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Civil Laws from Bishops University in 2005, and in 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper named Mr. Lozon as chair of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, a national agency devoted to improving cancer control across Canada.

Through his many valuable contributions to the Canadian health care system, Mr. Lozon has helped improve the social and economic quality of life for Canadians. It is with great pleasure that the University of Guelph Alumni Association names Jeffrey Lozon as Alumnus of Honour in 2008.
