Robert completed both a Bachelor of Computing - Honours and Master of Science degree at the School of Computer Science. Through his M.Sc. thesis, Robert gained insight into clinical decision support systems and was greatly excited about the future potential of such systems to diagnose patients quickly and accurately, saving lives, and improving quality of life. Robert's M.Sc. thesis continues to be used by school faculty as a referential example of how to write an M.Sc. thesis for new students. Robert prided himself on supporting others and was glad to allow it to be used to assist future students in their academic pursuits.

Robert was well-known in his community for his consistent kindness, patience, and support to all those around him. Robert cared deeply for his family, friends, and colleagues and would regularly reflect on their current well-being while thoughtfully considering how world events might share their future experiences. He cherished moments with his family, especially every opportunity he had to bond with his nieces.

Robert's talents led him to enjoy a 13-year career in software engineering in Guelph, Ontario where he was a cultural and technological leader to an ever-growing team in the outdoor recreation space. Many young professionals benefited from Robert's mentorship and superlative support. His empathetic approach aimed to bring out the best in others and to encourage them to consider the long-range social impact of their work.

As a lifelong polymath, Robert was always hungry to learn and discuss a wide array of topics. From the humanities of music, art, history, philosophy, politics, sports, and pets to the sciences of astronomy, chemistry, space, and computing he delighted in keeping up with the latest news and exploring diverse perspectives all the while remaining non-judgmental and curious.

In memory of Robert, this scholarship aims to support and inspire future engineers who exemplify his aim to create positive technological impacts on society. This scholarship seeks to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement but also incorporate an ethical lens to guide new advances in technological development and application to benefit society.

Our goal is to raise $32,000 by December 2026 to establish and endow the Rob Varga Memorial Scholarship, allowing Rob’s legacy to live on forever. Please join us in making a gift to the scholarship in his memory.
