Manvi Bhalla Biography

Biography

Manvi is an experienced activist and community organizer who has been a leader in numerous NGOs, community-based outreach efforts and school committees since age 11 onwards. While completing her Honours BSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Guelph, she was the President and Chief Financial Officer of the Guelph chapter of the international feminist anti-poverty organization, Oxfam. With that role, she managed a budget over $30,000, while organizing events on a variety of social causes including violence against women/MMIWG, education, awareness and support for women’s health, increasing turnout in the Federal election, sustainable agriculture and environmental degradation, food inequity and health inequities faced by underserved communities. Due to the positive impact of her advocacy work on intercultural and interfaith bridge-building within the Guelph community, she received the Bridge Builders Scholarship award in 2018. Manvi is also an experienced researcher, having worked at the Hospital for Sick Children, and presenting her undergraduate thesis as an oral podium presentation as first author at the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2018, alongside later publishing it in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery. With her strong background in science and research, and her many years of experience successfully leading youth organizations, she has now put her sights on contributing to the climate justice movement; a human-centric, rights-based approach to addressing the climate crisis, through helping found the youth-based national non-profit Shake Up The Establishment. SUTE’s work greatly aligns with her academic interests, as her MSc thesis research is aimed at improving climate change risk communication and at investigating barriers towards climate action within the public health sector. In addition to continuing to guest lecture on Environmental Racism and Justice, Manvi works to ensure intersectional and decolonized approaches are always centred within the health research space. She is currently the Chair of the Steering Committee for the ENRICH project and a member of the National Anti-Environmental Racism Coalition. She is also co-founder and director of the non-profit, missINFORMED, which is dedicated to improving the health literacy and health outcomes of womxn and gender-diverse folx. In Fall 2021, Manvi will be beginning her PhD at the University of British Columbia in Resources, Environment and Sustainability in the Law, Governance, Justice & Policy stream.
