Since graduating with a Master of Science in Exercise, Nutrition, and Metabolism from the University of Guelph (U of G) in 1997, Cyndy McLean has remained committed to the field of health and nutrition, both on and off-campus. Despite facing two major life-altering incidents, Cyndy has used sport and exercise as medicine, not only to support her recovery but also to inspire and assist others.
In 2003, Cyndy became paralyzed from the waist down after a 30-metre fall while hiking with her father and her dog. Despite living with chronic pain and relying on a wheelchair, she stayed active, even becoming a member of the Canadian National Wheelchair Tennis Team. Her remarkable perseverance earned her the Alumni Medal of Achievement from U of G in 2007.
In 2018, Cyndy faced another significant health challenge when she was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. She underwent extensive surgery, including the removal of 18 inches of her colon and two-thirds of her liver, followed by months of chemotherapy. Her final treatment was completed in 2020 at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre (GRRCC).
Now, Cyndy is channeling her experience into a powerful mission. From September 9-30, she will embark on a series of 10 handcycle rides, each spanning 21 kilometres, representing the 10 months and 21 chemotherapy treatments she received at GRRCC. Starting in Guelph, she will cycle through Fergus, Elora, Elmira, North Perth, Millbank/Linwood, Waterloo, Cambridge and Kitchener.
The goal of this initiative is to raise funds for the purchase of new chemotherapy chairs for GRRCC, ensuring future patients receive the comfort and care they need during their treatments. Cyndy's journey exemplifies the power of resilience and the impact of using one's strengths to uplift others a true testament to her enduring commitment to health and wellness.
