Rich Kuypers', B.Comm '00, journey from the University of Guelph to becoming the Chief Marketing Officer at The Condo Store is a testament to his adaptability, proactive mindset, and commitment to continuous learning. As a proud alumnus and donor, Rich. B.Comm reflects on his time at Guelph and how it shaped his successful career, inspiring him to give back through student scholarships.
Meaningful Memories at U of G
Initially drawn to U of G for its marketing program, Rich was captivated by the campus's small-town feel and the vibrant student life. "Once I visited the campus and got to experience how it feels to be a student there, I was locked in on U of G," he recalls. Despite the university's growth over the past 20 years, Rich still feels a strong connection to the campus and its community.
Rich's favourite spot on campus was a quiet nook in the library, which he fondly refers to as his "bat cave." However, his most cherished memories are of the time spent on the golf course, the rink, and various fields, competing in both intercollegiate and intramural sports. The Brass Taps, where he often enjoyed lunch with friends, also holds a special place in his heart.
Career Lessons
One of the most valuable lessons Rich learned as a student was the importance of taking immediate action. "Don’t wait. If there’s work to be done, do it now," he advises. This proactive approach has been a cornerstone of his career, helping him juggle multiple priorities and make efficient decisions.
Rich's career has been marked by versatility and adaptability. As the Chief Marketing Officer at The Condo Store, he attributes his success to his ability to learn new skills and adapt to new situations and remain flexible. He emphasizes the importance of soft skills, such as treating people with respect and empathy. "Treat people as people first, and then you can work on the business side of things," he says.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders
Rich and The Condo Store chose to give back through scholarships rather than capital projects because they believe in the power of investing in people. "If we can uplift someone to take the higher jump in their goals and aspirations or provide some confidence and assurance that they can achieve what they want to achieve, then we couldn’t be happier with providing this gift.” Rich shares. The Condo Store aims to instill the values of hard work, innovation, and relationship-building in future business leaders through their philanthropic efforts.
One of the most impactful moments for Rich was returning to campus to assist in handing out the first scholarship award. He was impressed by the quality of work produced by current students. By supporting the next generation of leaders, The Condo Store hopes to foster the development of societies, economies, and communities, advancing everyone toward greater prosperity.
