Program:Bachelor of Science Degree
Major:Human Kinetics
Minor:French

My name is Jake Chaput. I am a third year Human Kinetics major, minoring in French. I’m also a point guard on the varsity men’s basketball team.

I have always been aware of how blessed we are to live in Canada and as a proud Gryphon I am committed to continuing my personal mission to bring relief to those less fortunate than me.

In high school, I joined a mission trip to an orphanage in Nicaragua through NHP International. Staying at the orphanage, my group worked on drainage issues and road maintenance. We engaged the children with lively soccer games and used the power of sport to demonstrate leadership, team work and friendly competition.

My experience in Nicaragua served to deepen my humanitarian goals and in pursuit of those goals, I plan to take my Human Kinetics degree to medical school. I am deeply committed to joining Doctors Without Borders so that I can bring critical aid to those in need, on a global scale.

I have done my homework and although I cannot directly participate in Doctors Without Borders at this time, I am minoring in French because I know that diverse language skills are an asset for members of this vital humanitarian effort. I plan on taking a medical mission trip this summer with Projects Abroad to start my medical experience while continuing my humanitarian efforts. I haven’t strayed from the dream of becoming part of Doctors Without Borders and my current endeavours are all about developing myself into the best possible candidate for their team.

Receiving the Summerlee Humanitarian Scholarship is pivotal to my efforts – it is due to this generous award, that I will be joining Projects Abroad in the summer of 2019. Our efforts bring mobile medical clinics to remote villages in developing countries that have little or no access to healthcare.

I am forever grateful to the Angel Gabriel Foundation. The donors behind this fund are easing my personal journey to help on a global scale. Your funding of the projects that bring hands-on humanitarian aid to beneficiaries around the globe is nothing short of extraordinary. I will pay your generosity forward and I thank you.
