Tim Bray graduated from U of G h in 1981 with a double major in CompSci and Math. CompSci came second after he discovered that software was easier than mathematics and paid better. Since then, he has worked for two computer companies, two of his own startups (one of them Open Text), for the University of Waterloo on the Oxford English Dictionary project, then for Google and finally Amazon Web Services, from which he resigned in protest over whistleblower firings in May of 2020. Along the way he did some standards work, and is an editor of the official specifications of both XML and JSON. He lives in Vancouver and is active as an environmentalist, social-media practitioner, and open-source dabbler.
