The University of Guelph is proud to recognize Doug Wagner (Dip. ’74) with the 2025 Alumni of UGAA Legacy Award, honouring his leadership in Ontario’s agricultural sector and his commitment to youth development and community engagement.

Doug’s connection to the University of Guelph began at the Ontario Agricultural College, where he earned his agribusiness diploma and launched a career spanning more than five decades in agriculture and education. His strong leadership helped shape Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show (COFS), which he co-founded in 1993 and later led as President from 2012 to 2022. Under his guidance, COFS grew into a signature event, attracting tens of thousands each year and showcasing cutting-edge agricultural technologies, including the pioneering Dairy Innovation Centre.

Beyond his professional achievements, Doug has been a steadfast champion of youth leadership through 4-H Ontario and Junior Farmers, mentoring generations of young agricultural leaders. His early work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food laid the foundation for initiatives such as the Land Stewardship Program and the Environmental Farm Plan, which continue to benefit Ontario farmers today.

Doug’s legacy is deeply connected with the University of Guelph. As a past president of the OAC Alumni Association and an active member of the OAC Alumni Foundation, he has fostered alumni engagement and philanthropy. His efforts have helped raise more than $750,000 in support of soil research, student recruitment and agricultural outreach. Doug’s influence was also crucial in the development of Discovery Farm Woodstock, a permanent site for COFS that enables year-round learning and research.

Honoured with the T.R. Hilliard Distinguished Agricultural Extension Award in 2006 and inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2023, Doug has strengthened industry partnerships and inspired countless individuals across Canada. Earlier this year, he was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal — a fitting tribute to his lifelong service.

Doug Wagner exemplifies the transformative impact the University of Guelph has on Ontario’s agricultural landscape. His work continues to shape the future of agriculture in Canada and to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
